Educators

The SHPE Foundation offers several programs and resources for K12 teachers and college professors to assist in the educational development of their Hispanic students in the areas of math, science, and engineering.  The following programs are currently in effect.

Educator of the Year Award

An award established to recognize the exemplary contributions made by K-12 and higher education teachers, faculty and administrators to improving the learning environment for Hispanic students.

Two awards are presented as a competitive $5,000 Faculty Teaching Grant to be used in the development of cultural and social capital of Hispanic students.

One award is presented to a 2-year or 4-year college/university faculty or administrator, who has demonstrated a concerted effort to increase the persistence rate of Hispanic students in the STEM disciplines.

Another award is presented to a K-12 math or science teacher, who has demonstrated a selfless desire to improve the academic and social consciousness of Hispanic students through the balanced use of innovative teaching techniques, cultural-cognizant mentorship, and leadership integrity.

The awards are presented at the national SHPE Conference. The award will provide the recipient with two (2) complementary conference registrations, which includes three (3) hotel nights and two (2) Gala guest tickets.

Teacher Program

This program is a two-day program for 100 middle school and high school science and math teachers, who teach in predominant Hispanic-serving schools. This in-service training provides teachers with the resources and strategies needed to successfully connect Hispanic students to science and mathematics curriculum through the application of culturally competent and innovative techniques. Hands-on workshops and supplementary educational materials are presented. The materials presented reflect national teaching standards in math and science and provide teachers the opportunity to receive professional development credits. (Teachers are encouraged to check with their school district policies in regard to receiving credits).

Teachers also have the opportunity to browse through the SHPE Career Fair and visit with over 200 companies and graduate programs to learn about the latest technologies in science and engineering and collect resources for their classrooms.

Dean’s Summit

This summit brings together leaders from Academia to develop an Action Plan for how we can best partner with Hispanic Serving Institutions and majority institutions to increase Hispanic student retention, persistence and graduation rates both in undergraduate and graduate STEM fields.

The Summit is different from other similar topics, because it includes a strategy session where we are asking the participants to develop a tangible roadmap that defines the relationship between SHPE Inc., SHPE Foundation and targeted higher education institutions.

The goal is to conclude the Summit with measurable steps and policies that both SHPE Inc., SHPE Foundation and academie will immediately launch in an effort to achieve our goal of increasing the success rates of Hispanics in STEM fields.
